DIY Ironing Board Cover

Standard

I have such a fun job (writing books and classroom resources for K-5 students and teachers!) and I’m lucky to have a small but cozy home office to work in. It has a large black desk, a black rolling chair, and black metal shelves filled with my curriculum and reference books. It also has a matching black metal shelf for my fabric and sewing/craft supplies and a very small black desk for my sewing machine. My favorite piece of furniture is a dressing table bench that belonged to my Aunt Vitha. We painted it black and recovered the seat in zebra print, using a bedsheet I found at Target. I also made a black and white alphabet print cover for my sewing machine (from a fun book called Simply Irresistible Bags, but I’ve since seen lots of tutorials on sewing blogs and Pinterest) and black and white floral curtains (basic hemmed sides and bottom and casing on top) for the window.Β  So, when I needed to leave my ironing board set up for my after-hours sewing projects, its stained, worn, pink and green cover looked badly out of place. This weekend I remedied the problem by making a new cover from the zebra bedsheet! I simply used the old cover for a pattern, leaving a little extra around the edges to stitch a casing for elastic. Oh yes, and the old cover had two velcro straps that fastened under the ironing board to help keep it in place, so I snipped those off to reuse, too. It fits, and I love it! β™₯

  1. We will soon have Target in Edmonton and I can’t wail….those sheets are to die for. I imagine you got a lot of fabric out of them. Cute Idea with the Ironing board..I really need a new cover on mine too.

    • You’ll love your Target! Besides being a great store, they sponsor the family apartments at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, so I’m always happy to see lots of people supporting THEM. I don’t know why I waited so long to make a new ironing board cover because it was super easy! And I still have lots of the fabric left, even after two projects with the sheet, so it’s a really economical way to sew. Thank you for stopping by! πŸ™‚

  2. Although I don’t use my ironing board as often as I should, its cover is getting pretty shabby. Great idea about using a bed sheet. There isn’t a whole lot of choices for ironing board covers out there. This way you can co-ordinate with whatever you want! πŸ™‚

    • Thank you! I’ve had so much fun making pillows with this fabric, too! For one I found and embroidered the letters p, i, l, l, o, and w in red, and for two others I found and embroidered the letters for the recipients’ names in red. I have just a bit left, so I need to find a project for it, too! πŸ™‚
