I previously posted about the easy, fun roll-up pencil kits (upcycled from placemats) that I learned how to make using this Martha Stewart tutorial. Here’s my newest one! I love using mats that are patterned on one side and plain on the other . . . perfect for showing off the pretty pencil colors. ♥

My future grandchildren are going to be so glad I read your blog–I love this!
Thank you, MQB! And your future daughters-in-law can carry them in their purses so they’re always ready with a little entertainment for your future grandchildren. 🙂
I really do love these!!
Thank you, Danielle! You’ll have one in YOUR purse someday! 🙂
What a great project! I hadn’t seen this version using placemats before. Love it!
Thank you! They’re easy, quick, fun, and colorful . . . the perfect combination for me! 🙂
This is nice and would also work well for my crochet hooks!
Oooh . . . what a great idea! Or, you could turn the placemat the long way and use it for knitting needles . . . 🙂
I hadn’t even thought of the knitting needles … but I haven’t learned knitting yet either.
Me, either! Someday! 🙂

Oh I really like the roll up pencil idea. One more thing to use my scraps on. I’m totally gonna make one of these! Thanks for the idea.
You’re very welcome! If you read the other comments, you’ll see that some crafters are going to make these for crochet hooks and knitting needles, too! 🙂 I can’t wait to see yours!
Well with my BOTM, Sampler, the Art Museum and Quilt show from now til the end of the week, I don’t think I will be able to get it done but I will definitely post it when I do. I will b back to see the others for sure.
Good luck with all your projects and shows! 🙂

So much prettier than the plastic cover they come in. I’ll have to check Homesense for a cheapy placemat. Good one Katherine!
I always check the clearance bins/aisles for random leftover placemats when I’m shopping . . . sometimes I can get them for $1 that way! 🙂
