I bought this purse pattern from my talented bloggy friend Laura at LC’s Cottage Etsy shop and couldn’t wait to try it!
The pattern comes in four different sizes and has very clear directions. It was perfect for my first try at sewing a real purse!
This project was really fun to make and I plan to try it again . . . although maybe with fabric that doesn’t need matched next time. π
The purse has a large outside pocket and two smaller ones inside, and I used one of my grandmother’s vintage buttons for the closure.
Since I had some fabric left over, I designed a little tote with the patterned fabric on the bottom, inside, and handles and some vintage bead a-la-mode. β₯
What a fun purse. Love the fabric! Enjoy your weekend Katherine. β

Thank you, Vickie! My weekend is off to a great start! π
Super cute!
Thank you! I’m really enjoying using the purse, and I’ll probably use the tote for a gift bag one of these days. π
love the colors and size…
Thank you, Marilyn! It really IS a good size . . . I can get in everything I need! π
Wow, those are quite nice.
Thank you! I’ve been wanting to try some purses, so this was a good one to start with. I have at least four more patterns on my DO! list to try next! π
Very cute! I’m curious (and I’m kind of a new follower, so if you’ve addressed this before, forgive me) do you always look for a way to use up your scraps right away, like with the tote? Or do you save some for “someday” projects? I’ve been going through my stash recently and finding fabrics that I saved years ago and never used. I feel like I’ve let the fabrics down. π¦
Good question! I usually just tuck them away. But since I was in a “bag mood” I decided to go ahead and make the tote. I actually have quite a lot of the brown fabric left, so I’m sure it will reappear in another project someday. And I, too, have many remnants that have languished far too long, and as much as I’d like to use them before buying new fabrics, I keep seeing some I think I can’t live without. Sigh . . . π
Great colour combo. Handy sized bags they are lovely.
Thank you, Sharon! Right now I seem to be attracted to anything with a little teal or turquoise in it! π
I love these! They turned out great!
Thank you, Danielle! It’s been so nice to have time to get reacquainted with my sewing machine! π
very pretty Katherine, love the colors, they are perfect for Fall π warm and cheerful at the same time! π
Thank you, Ingrid! And I DO love fall! π
Your first try at sewing a purse is amazing! Nice job! Anny
Thank you, Anny! And a bag pattern I got from you is on my short list to try next . . . can’t wait!!! π
Great fabric choices! You know that I love bags…. and this one looks great!
Thank you for the lovely compliment! AND . . . thank you for all the free pattern links you’ve been sharing on your blog! You’re the best! π
Aw shucks!
The bags look great Katherine! Thank you very much for the shout out too!
You’re very welcome, Laura! The pattern was sort of an impulse buy, but I’m really glad I had that impulse! π
They are really good and I loved that you used your grandmothers button. You have given me a really good idea. I make crochet purses and then fuss about finding wooden or plastic handles. Why not use material? You are brilliant.!
That’s a great idea! I just bought some wooden handles for a purse pattern that I saw in a magazine, and I decided that those would get pretty expensive if I get them on a regular basis! π I have a crochet bag that my grandmother made for me and it has a crocheted handle, which looks really pretty, too. π
So cute and I love that fabric! It’s perfect for going into fall.
Thank you! I just love it, too. The colorful one is an upholstery fabric and (OOPS!!!) I burned a little hole on the outside pocket when pressing it . . . which is why it now has the trim. Then I used the trim on the inside pockets, too, so it would look like it was on purpose! π
Love the fabrics and layout you used on this! First purse? Wow! I’m impressed!
Thank you! That’s so sweet of you to say! π
Both are delightful. This reminds me that I downloaded a pattern for a purse a year ago, and promptly forgot about it. I’m amazed at all the sewing you get done.
I also like the use of the vintage button. Nice idea.
Awww . . . thank you! And I hope you get a chance to make your purse soon! π
Thank you. I tend to do more sewing, knitting and puzzle-making in the colder months so perhaps I’ll get to it then. You’re inspiring.
Beautiful bags. I love the shape of your tote! Bags are my favorite things to make & buy.
Thank you, Debbie! They really are fun to make!!! π
Gr8 job, I love them!
Thank you, Antionette! π
Niiiice! I’m working on some bags now, I fear I’m going down a big rabbit hole! I have a thing for unusual buttons too so they plan to feature elsewhere, but really need to acquire my mothers button tin!
Hang in there! I had quite a few small blips (MOST of which I was able to fix!) π but in the end it turned out nicely. Also, I’m not very good at imagining how a bunch of flat pieces are going to come together to form a 3-dimensional object, so I frequently say, “Wow!” as it takes shape! π
Very cute purse and tote. You are so talented π
Thank you, Ginny! I’m working on another purse pattern now. Aaaaaaaaaaaand . . . I have a new appreciation for people who make purses! π
Quite lovely! I love the contrasting bags and colors.
Thank you, Victoria! I’m really enjoying carrying the purse! π
What a fun project! In my younger days, I made myself a cloth purse, but it was a much simpler design. I love what you did with the pattern. π
Thank you! That fabric really caught my eye . . . not thinking at the time that I would have to match the pattern! π But it worked out great! π
